4 Essential Parenting Tools for the Road

parentChange of Clothes

Whether your child spills their food, has an accident, or gets car sick, one of the most important things you can keep with you is a change of clothing. You can either pack this in your travel bag or keep an extra pair of clothes in the car at all times. Make sure you have appropriate clothing, however. For example, you don’t want to dress your child in shorts if it’s the middle of a cold, snowy winter. If you know that your child is likely to go through a couple of outfits, bring along more than one change.

Snacks

If you’re going on a long road trip, you already know that having snacks along is a must. However, even on short rides, having snacks with you can be extremely helpful. Sometimes you end up on the road longer than expected, and having some healthy snacks keeps you and the children happier. It’s usually best to keep snacks in your travel bag, not in the vehicle itself. Make sure you grab food that isn’t going to go bad or melt while you’re in the vehicle. Food such as crackers are a great option.

Clean-up Supplies

Dealing with messes is simply part of parenting. When you’re on the go, it’s important to have clean up supplies with you. These can usually be left in the car. Some of the supplies you should have on hand include an extra box of wipes, paper towels, and even some cleaning spray can help you mitigate any messes you have to deal with while on the road. It’s also a good idea to keep some trash bags in the car for cleaning up large or small messes.

Medications

If your child takes medication regularly, make sure you don’t leave home without it. Having medications on hand helps keep your stress levels down and ensures that your child gets the care they need. Consider keeping non-regular medications in your travel bag, such as Tylenol, allergy medications, or even something to help with car sickness. These help keep everyone going, even when your little one isn’t feeling so great. Medications should not be left in the vehicle, since they can go bad with extreme temperatures. However, if you carry them in your travel bag, you’ll always have what you need.

Keeping your car clean, your kids happy and healthy, and yourself in a good mood is important when you head out with the little ones. Make sure you bring along all the supplies you need, whether you’re going on a short trip or a long vacation. With these supplies, your drive becomes a lot less stressful.
