How to Care for Your Car Near the Ocean

Inspect the Car Regularly

Depending on the length of your trip, you may not have to worry too much about issues like rust. However, it’s a good idea to take a full inspection of your car during your trip. If you see any areas of the paint that are starting to chip or rust, make sure to treat these properly. Use a sealant or repaint the area to ensure you don’t get further damage. If you’re on an extended vacation near the ocean, this is a big way to prevent serious damage to your vehicle.

Have the Internals Checked

If you’re parked near the ocean for a long time, make sure to get your vehicle checked by a dealership or mechanic. While the exterior of the car is easy for you to check, interior mechanics, such as the brakes, can rust or corrode. This is due not only to the salt in the air and water, but also the humidity that comes when you’re near the ocean. A full inspection allows you to make sure everything in the car is up to par and undamaged.

Wash the Car

The best way to prevent damage from the sea air is to wash the car regularly while you’re on your vacation. When you wash the car, you’re getting all the salt off and keeping your car protected. The longer salt sits on your vehicle, the more likely it is to chip or rust. When you wash the car, make sure to add a protective coat of wax to help keep salt off the paint job. If you don’t feel like taking the time to wash your car, take it to an auto wash.

Find Covered Parking

If at all possible, try to find covered parking during your vacation. Covered parking helps protect your car from the humidity and the sea salt coming in from the ocean. While covered parking isn’t always readily available for those on a trip, ask around and see what you can find. There may be parking garages near where you’re staying that you can take advantage of. If you’re unable to find covered parking, consider getting a car cover to keep your vehicle protected. The main goal is to keep another layer of protection around your car to keep harmful items off the exterior.

Many people don’t think about damage to their vehicle when they’re on vacation. However, if you plan ahead, you can be sure your car comes back home in great condition. Take precautions to make the best of your trip and keep your car looking and running great.
