Typically speaking, that’s never been particularly important to enthusiasts of the brand, who mostly utilize their Jeep vehicles for off-road driving. But over the past several years, fuel economy has become one of the most important aspects of any vehicle, so Jeep has created an answer to that “problem.” The new 4xe models, which kicked off on the Wrangler and are now also available on the Grand Cherokee, are plug-in hybrid electric versions of their original models. What comprises the Grand Cherokee 4xe powertrain?

There is more to the powertrain of the Grand Cherokee 4xe than on a traditional vehicle. The powertrain is built around a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine but also features a pair of electric motors, a 400V battery pack and a TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission. When combined, the Grand Cherokee 4xe generates a power output of 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque.

How far can you travel in the Grand Cherokee 4xe?

As a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, the Grand Cherokee 4xe wasn’t designed for long-distance, all-electric trips. Its all-electric driving range is meant for shorter jaunts or to supplement its ordinary range. With that in mind, you’ll be able to operate purely on electricity for 25 miles or for roughly 440 miles altogether.

How long does it take to charge the Grand Cherokee 4xe?

When you completely deplete your battery pack, it’ll take a full 12 hours to charge it back up to capacity when using the included charger in a standard home outlet. You can upgrade to a Level II charging system to reduce that time down to two hours, but this requires upgrades and extra costs.

What configurations are available for the Grand Cherokee 4xe?

The Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe is a separate model with its own trim levels, of which there are four in total. Options start off with the base 4xe then the Trailhawk 4xe, Overland 4xe and Summit 4xe. You’ll also have a multitude of color options to choose from, including nine exterior colors and four interior.

What’s new for 2023?

Although Jeep just introduced the Grand Cherokee 4xe for the 2022 model year, some subtle changes were introduced for the 2023 model year. Not only is the Trailhawk model now exclusive to the 4xe powertrain, but it also now features Gloss Black exterior accents as a standard feature.
