Dodge Dakota Sport Convertible Makes a Splash at Mecum Auction

2023 Dodge Dakota Convertible in Colorado Red

There’s always at least one rare or lesser-known vehicle among auto enthusiasts, and for off-road and truck fans, that vehicle might just be the Dodge Dakota. It’s not just any Dakota, either; the one we’re talking about is a convertible. That’s right, for a short time, the now-well-known Dakota was in production with a convertible top. Released as the Dodge Dakota Sport, this ultra-rare truck made an appearance at a Mecum auction earlier this year, surprising and delighting those lucky enough to see it in person.

A Chance of a Lifetime

Auction attendees got the chance to witness a well-kept 1990 Dodge Dakota Sport at November’s auction in Las Vegas. It was just one of over 1,000 vehicles for sale at the SEMA Auto Show, but there’s something extra special about this particular one. One of just over 900 Dakota convertibles produced that year, the vehicle in question was presented in near-mint condition. Painted a classic Bright White, the Dakota convertible was truly a sight to see.

After their original production at the Michigan factory, the Dakotas were shipped to American Sunroof Company for conversion. There, assemblers would cut off the hard roof and install a vinyl top with a padded roll bar. Buyers were then able to remove or fold the soft top to experience the open air in their unique truck. 1990 models were available in just three colors: Colorado Red (pictured above), Black, and Bright White.

1990 Dodge Dakota Sport Stats

As reported by Mecum, these are some of the Dakota’s stats. While it might not be able to compete with other trucks of today, the rarity of this vehicle combined with its low mileage makes for a fun stats list.

  • One of 909 produced in 1990
  • Estimated Price: $25,000-35,000
  • 9L Magnum V6 Engine
  • Automatic Transmission w/ Overdrive
  • Power Steering and Brakes
  • Original White/Gray Cloth Interior

Since the convertible Dakota was only produced for three years in varying numbers, it’s unknown how many similar trucks might be out there. One thing is for sure, though: few are guaranteed to be as well cared for as the one that went up for sale.

While you might not have been among those to witness the Dakota convertible, you can still own one of the latest trucks available at Rairdon’s of Kirkland. Browse our latest Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and RAM models, then contact us if you see something that catches your eye!
