What to Know Before Offroading With Your Jeep
Top Tips for Offroading In Your Jeep
Despite Jeep vehicles being pros at going offroad, offroading isn’t something that you should do unprepared. If you’re new to offroading with your Jeep, allow us to get you started on the right foot.
Remember that offroading can be fun, but the most important thing is safety. You should always put the safety of you and your passengers before anything else, and never do anything that you feel uncomfortable with.
Things to Know Before Offroading
With that said, here are some of our top tips and things to know before you hit the unbeaten trail in your Jeep vehicle.
- Inspect your vehicle. You don’t want to run into unexpected breakdowns of any equipment while off the road. Things to check include the battery function, the condition on all hoses, fluid levels and tire pressure.
- Watch your speed. Driving offroad isn’t about going fast. Though there may be some trails out there where it can be fun to hit the gas pedal and toss up some mud, many trails and courses are challenging enough to require slow and steady vehicle movement rather than speed.
- Conquer one type of terrain at a time. From mountains to desert, here in Washington state, you have access to it all. That said, you shouldn’t necessarily attempt to take on a variety of trails or courses all in one outing. Your Jeep may require a unique setup depending on what kind of terrain you are driving on. When optimizing your vehicle for sand, for example, it’s advised that you drop the tire pressure 10 – 12 pounds below the normal psi. Traversing rocks, however, calls for a drop in tire pressure of just 3 – 5 psi.
- Leave nature how you found it. Jeep lovers are nature lovers too. Whether riding on marked trails or going out on your own, be sure to follow any posted signage and avoid damaging the natural area.
