What’s New: 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee
2023 marks the 30th anniversary of the Grand Cherokee taking on the premium SUV segment and beating the luxury brands on their own turf. The Grand Cherokee project was already in development when Chrysler purchased the Jeep brand in 1987, and Chrysler spent years getting the product right before it launched in 1993 creating the modern SUV segment.
The current 5th-generation Grand Cherokee first emerged in 2021 with the Grand Cherokee L, marking the first time a Grand Cherokee wheelbase and overall length were stretched to include a 3rd-row seat. The 5th generation 2-row Grand Cherokee followed in 2022. Both models represented the biggest visual change since the model’s 1993 debut. The shorter, forward-leaning seven-section grille leads to a sophisticated chiseled body topped by an available contrasting black roof. The body surfacing, greenhouse, and trim all communicate precision and refinement.
The interior cements the vehicle’s luxury standing with wood finish or other accent finishes stretching across the dash, extending into the door panels, and even the steering wheel. The driver’s digital gauge cluster keeps the driver informed along with the 10-inch center touchscreen and even another available display exclusively for the front passenger.
This 5th generation Grand Cherokee is now a family of vehicles, which in addition to the Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee L, includes the 4xe plug-in hybrid model, the most technologically advanced Grand Cherokee model to date.
The 4xe will charge fully overnight from a normal household socket to provide 25 miles of all-electric driving. It is enough to cover many owners’ daily commutes or daily driving routines, allowing them to get through the week with little if any gasoline consumed. Overall, the model is rated at 56 MPGe, even as it produces 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. The 4xe is Trail Rated and includes a Trailhawk model, which conquered the legendary Rubicon trail on all-electric power. The 2024 4xe gains an Anniversary Edition this year. This is an extension of the 2023 30th Anniversary Edition which offers the following:
- Capri leatherette seats
- Ventilated front seats
- Wireless charging pad
- Nine-speaker Alpine audio
- Uconnect 5 NAV
- Unique blacked-out exterior
- 20-inch black wheels
- Body-color rear fascia, lower moldings, sill claddings, and wheel flares
The 2024 Grand Cherokee 4xe Trail Hawk model also gets 18-inch black-painted aluminum wheels.
Changes for the rest of the Grand Cherokee lineup bring refinement and style. The non-electrified Trailhawk model also gets the black 18-inch wheels as standard equipment and the Grand Cherokee Limited also gets new standard 18-inch polished/painted aluminum wheels.
Unchanged on the non-electrified models is the standard Pentastar 3.6-liter V-6-engine, rated at 290 horsepower and 257 lb.-ft. of torque, with a towing capacity of up to 6,200 pounds. The 5.7-liter V-8 is also available, producing 357 horsepower and 390 lb.-ft. of torque with a best-in-class towing capacity of up to 7,200 pounds. For off-road capability, the Grand Cherokee offers three 4WD systems: Quadra-Trac I, Quadra-Trac II, and Quadra-Drive II with rear electronic limited-slip differential (ELSD). All three systems are equipped with an active transfer case to improve traction by moving torque to work with the wheel with the most grip.
The few 2024 Grand Cherokee model line changes reflect the thought and comprehensiveness of the 5th-generation design. It remains the premium model of choice in its class with fine road manners, and uncontested off-road capability. Keep in mind that the premium for the Grand Cherokee 4xe’s efficiency is now significantly reduced with 15% off of the list price representing savings from $6 – $8K.
