History of Jeep

From its start during WWII to a modern-day legend, Jeep has transformed the automotive industry through innovative design and unbeatable performance. Few brand enthusiasts are as passionate as those of Jeep, and its 80-year history has laid the foundation for that to continue. Its adventurous spirit has spanned nearly a century of off-roading, family excursions, and everyday luxury that has earned its badge of honor.
History in the Making
Originally a war vehicle, the Jeep brand found its start in the midst of WWII. The Axis powers needed a vehicle that was powerful, tough, and highly capable, and that’s precisely what they got. The first Jeep vehicles were born from a collaborative effort to make the most effective reconnaissance vehicles that could aid in the war efforts, and with its original design by Bantam along with contributions from Ford and Willys, the first Jeep was born. Eventually, as the war began to wind down, the Jeep made its way into civilian life.
From there, post-war prosperity saw a rise in demand for recreational vehicles that only grew over the next several decades. Although Jeep still relied on military contracts, it had a small but loyal fanbase even as early as the 1950s. Advancements in engineering made the Jeep more capable than ever, with a stronger frame, enhanced suspension, and underwater driving ability that took it into the Korean War. The introduction of the Wagoneer in the 1960 was the first luxury 4×4 ever, and that’s not the only first. It included the first automatic transmission, first full-time 4×4, and more, appealing to families who wanted something extra in their vehicle. The CJ-6 was developed with more seating and cargo, giving families even more reasons to drive a Jeep.
Over the years, Jeep continued to introduce exciting new designs like the Gladiator and Cherokee. They continued to appeal to the off-roading audience with evolving suspension and more powerful engines. Factory trims and aftermarket modifications appealed to those who wanted to travel off the highway and continues to be what draws so many to the Jeep brand. Today, Jeep is one of the most recognized and well-known brands with a worldwide following of dedicated drivers. Models like the Cherokee and Wrangler remain, while the brand keeps pushing boundaries with models like the electrified 4xe. With a history of breaking the mold and continuing to bring new and exciting innovations to its customers, we can’t wait to see what Jeep has in store for the future.
